SMOKING SHEESHA AND CIGARETTES – WOMEN TELL THEIR STORIES

Imagine that while climbing the steps of your home, you get the smell of M assil, the substance used in hubbly-bubble. You may become very mad at that moment. You may think of making a very important decision in your life and turn your home topsy-turvy. However, you may control your temper, if you are wise. Any wrong move may lead to breaking your wife s ribs.

Imagine entering your home and finding your wife in a state of ecstasy enjoying smoking a Sheesha pipe. Some husbands may be tolerant while others may be rash, which may put them behind bars.

Strange enough, there are husbands who schedule a time where he and his wife can sit on a sofa, and switch on dim lights and colored chandeliers to create a special atmosphere. Then they start smoking the Sheesha. The M assil used in the Sheesha comes in various flavors including strawberry, apple and many others.

Several women who smoke Sheesha or cigarettes were interviewed by Al-Nadwa Arabic daily.

A Woman who smokes Sheesha or cigarettes may do so in order to escape from the reality of life and problems, especially from her family. By doing this she feels that she is blowing away whatever bad feelings she has in her chest, said Sawsan, a woman who smokes cigarettes. These feelings just dissipate in the air in the form of smoke that has no meaning or value. With time and without noticing, she becomes addicted to Sheesha. Some women smoke cigarettes just to show that they have prestige or they may be imitating their colleagues whom they admire. Meanwhile, another group believes that smoking Sheesha or cigarettes means they are mature.

Asked how her husband reacted when he learned that she smokes cigarettes, Sawsan said that he is a heavy smoker himself. Sometimes he lights her a cigarette or he asks her to prepare a Sheesha that they can share. Asked about her children s and neighbors views on her habit, Sawsan said that smoking Sheesha has become widespread in most restaurants and teashops to the extent that children have become used to it, and it is no longer embarrassing to see a woman smoking Sheesha or cigarettes.

Asked if she would tolerate seeing her daughter or sister smoking cigarettes, she said she would try her level best to explain to them the harms of smoking. I will try to convince them that smoking has not benefited me, neither in body nor in mind. I pray to Allah to help me kick this habit, she said.

Asked how she gets the money to spend on cigarettes or Sheesha, she said that she works. She added that she knows the harm of smoking, yet she continues the bad habit.

The reason for the spread of Sheesha and cigarette smoking among girls and women is that they become friends with bad companions, said a student named Widad, while others smoke socially and in imitation of other girls so that they are described as civilized and elegant. The husband s reaction depends upon his mentality. Some husbands deal with the problem wisely, while others join in smoking with their wives and a third group beat their wives and inform their families.

As to their reputation among their children and neighbors, Widad adds, many women smoke secretly with their companions while others don t give a hoot about what others would say. They smoke openly before the family. This has become quite normal.

Asked about the expenses for buying cigarettes or smoking Sheesha, Widad said she gets a university stipend part of which she spends on buying cigarettes.

Meanwhile, a teacher named Hadiya finds this problematic.

Unfortunately this matter has spread among many women and girls despite their knowledge that it is haram [impermissible] and is harmful to their health, she said. Furthermore, women are physically weaker than men and cannot bear smoking Sheesha or cigarettes. Smoking has claimed many men s lives. So how about women? I pray to God to guide them and help them to keep away from this poison.
